Cardiff Bay
Cardiff Bay [or as it was then called Cardiff Docks] was once upon a time the largest single coal exporting venue in the world. Now that there is not so much demand for Welsh coal as there once was the decision was made to develop the area for commerce & leisure.
The first thing that had to be done was something to counteract the tide. The Cardiff Bay barrage was put in place during the 1990s, with completion in 1999. This in effect caused a massive freshwater lake which made it easier for boating.
The next thing they had to do was renovate the area and invest in infrastructure so that companies would want to set up business in the new venture. This was done and now Cardiff Bay is one of the most vibrant areas of this stunning new city. There is a large number of shops and other commercial venues in the development, along with bars, cafes and restaurants. It doesn’t close down at night time either, there are hotels and Night Clubs.
But it isn’t all modern. This is in many ways a historical site of great cultural importance. Overlooking the whole development is the ‘Sjømannskirken’ or seaman’s Church. This highlights the time when Cardiff was a vast port and the Norwegian Merchant Navy was one of the largest in the world. The church was built to serve the large Norwegian population that had come to live in Cardiff. These days now that Cardiff is no longer the Mecca for Norwegians that it once was, the building has been converted into an arts and cultural centre.
And the future continues to look rosy for the Cardiff Bay development, as more and more initiatives take place, soon there will be the new Sports Village to complement the other leisure and commercial facilities.
